North Carolina Apple campus could be 'a done deal' if incentives pass

North Carolina leaders say they're poised to make the state even more attractive to big businesses that want to locate here.

He said North Carolina has been working for the past eight years to create incentives, a talent pool and a business climate that attracts companies like Apple. Apple may be offering conservative estimates for regulatory reasons, or could be considering different uses of multiple locations. The new campus will hold call center workers at first.

Apple's plans are part of a pledge the company has made to invest $350 billion in the United States over the next five years, hire 20,000 more Apple employees, and set up a new Apple campus.

Of course, Amazon is also considering Northern Virginia as one of 20 finalists for the 50,000-job HQ2, along with D.C. and Montgomery County, Md.

Economic development officials under Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) proposed several sites for the project after Apple representatives said the company was seeking 4 million square feet of office space to accommodate 20,000 jobs, according to officials and real estate executives familiar with the discussions.

Lawmakers in North Carolina are apparently making a bid for Apple to build its next campus in the state and the Research Triangle Park is apparently at the top of the list for possible sites, CNBC reports.

Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly met with NC Governor Roy Cooper when the former was in Durham to give a commencement address at Duke University.

Two of those locations, Crystal City and the Loudoun land, are part of sites Northam also pitched to Amazon.

Tens of thousands of the world's brightest technology developers could be heading to Northern Virginia in the next few years, as two of the world's largest tech companies are said to be considering building their next facilities there.

Apple didn't immediately return a request for comment. Governor Cooper and the State General Assembly are now putting together an incentive package that includes 30 years of [county] property tax abatements and adjustments to employee withholding taxes (among other things) that are favorable to Apple. The new campuses will not be anything like the previous ones.
