Drugmaker Allegran announced a nationwide recall of its Taytulla birth control treatment Tuesday after some packages featured placebo and active pills placed out of order.

Allergan has recalled nearly 170,000 sample packs of birth control pills nationwide because of a packaging error that could put consumers at risk for unintended pregnancy.

Allergan said it hasn't heard of any unintended pregnancies caused by the faulty packaging, the Wall Street Journal reported.

It says four placebo pills were placed out of order in the Taytulla packs. The remaining four, which are meant to be taken during the final four days of each pack, do not have hormones.

The packs contain 24 "active" pills with hormones, followed by four inactive, or placebo, pills that don't contain hormones.

The recall involves lot 5620706, which expires in May 2019. For birth control pills to be effective, they need to be taken every day at the same time.

Only one lot of sample packs had misplaced pills, Allergan told STAT News. Note the difference in locations of the darker colored pills. If patients have concerns regarding the possibility of an unintended pregnancy they should consult their physician.

According to STAT News, this is the only lot of sample packs that have been identified as incorrectly packaged. The Company is notifying customers via a recall letter and is arranging for return of all sample packs.

On Monday, Allergan's stock closed down 1.91 percent. The company has been buffeted for months by bad publicity related to its unsuccessful deal with an Native American tribe to shield itself from a patent challenge.
