Later, Browder posted another tweet, informing on his release: "Good news".

The Russians have repeatedly tried to get Interpol to issue an arrest warrant for Browder.

"Bill Browder remained in police custody this morning for the minimum necessary time, until Interpol Spain verified that the arrest warrant issued by the Russian authorities for tax evasion was invalid", according to a Spanish-language tweet by police.

"An arrest warrant has a date limit and when that expires, it must be deleted from the computer programme and in this case Interpol hadn't deleted it".

Update 11:35 a.m. Spanish police told The Spain Report that Mr. Browder had technically been under arrest during the "hour or so" it took to confirm his identity and the status of the arrest warrant: "he was not handcuffed, though", said a spokesman. Browder, a British citizen who was born in the US, claims the case against him is politically motivated.

Trump doesn't get an apology because he's the leader of a democracy and that means he needs to be held to account by his citizens. Barr sounds like she would support such a development. "I will examine all of my options carefully and get back to U [sic]".

Mr Browder was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Russian court late last year, on fraud and tax evasion charges. Russian Federation placed him on the Interpol wanted list in 2017, and has used the system to seek his arrest several times.

In a resolution, the Council of Europe called on all member countries, including Spain, to "refrain from carrying out arrests on the basis of red notices when they have serious concerns that the notice in question could be abusive".

The Spanish national police told Business Insider the arrest came a search and seizure warrant from Interpol, a global agency which facilitates requests by police forces to share information or make arrests in other countries.

"Browder is not wanted via Interpol channels". "They won't tell me which station". Police found out there that the order was no longer valid, she said.

Since then, Mr Browder has campaigned for investigations into the alleged fraud.

The Associated Press does not identify alleged victims of sexual assaults without their consent. Until the scandal, Weinstein was among the most influential forces in American film.

But Browder countered that, telling City A.M.:"Interpol is playing a word game - there has never been a red notice, but there have been a number of diffusion notices - it just means it hasn't been officially approved".

Business Insider has requested clarification from Interpol.

Browder has worked in the past with Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in detention in 2009, sparking worldwide outrage over claims that his imprisonment was politically motivated.

His campaign for Magnitsky has had strong resonance worldwide.
