Trump confirms North Korea summit will happen June 12 in Singapore

Since Trump's abrupt cancellation last week of the historic meeting with Kim, there's been an worldwide scramble to salvage the event - with rapid-fire diplomacy efforts in the US, on the Korean Peninsula and in Singapore, the Southeast Asian city-state hosting the summit.

The letter comes as the two countries work to revive a Trump-Kim summit on June 12 in Singapore.

President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore may occur after all.

Washington has demanded that the North agree to a "complete, verifiable and irreversible" end to Pyongyang's nuclear program, which is close to the point where it could threaten United States cities with missile strikes.

"I look forward to the day I can take the sanctions off North Korea", Trump added.

Trump made the announcement, just a week after he had said he was canceling the Singapore summit, following a more than hour-long meeting with a top North Korean official who delivered a letter from the North Korean leader.

The two men met for 45 minutes and Jo brought Clinton a letter from Kim Jong-il, the late father of North Korea's current leader.

The President spoke to reporters after the meeting ended (video above, via ABC), and said it was nice and "very interesting". The US and China are both signatories to the armistice.

Trump said that North Korea was interested in denuclearisation, and that the United States was now starting a "process" and a "relationship" that he believed would ultimately be successful.

Since January, Kim has significantly toned down his rhetoric against Washington and Seoul and tried to reach out to them following a year of heightened nuclear tensions that saw increased fears of war on the Korean Peninsula.

Other analysts were more cautious about the possibility of the three-way summit, raising questions over whether the U.S. would agree to it.

"We're meeting with the chairman on June 12 - and I think it's probably going to be a very successful", Trump said. "Doing so will likely be a political burden for Trump".

Yet after North Korea agreed to the summit, those intentions were thrown into doubt when Pyongyang rejected calls from U.S. A senior State Department official briefed reporters separately as Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol met late on Wednesday.
