Police fire on funeral of Kashmir man killed by soldiers

The angry mourners were marching with the man's body to a graveyard in Srinagar on Saturday when police and soldiers used force to stop them.

Police said there was no deployment in the area on Friday as the authorities had chose to ease tension in the area during Friday's congregational prayers.

The incident took place on a day when the police chose to keep their men away from the mosque for "peaceful congregation" and "to avoid confrontation after previous Friday's deadly clashes". Fierce clashes broke out in several places in the city.

When hundreds of residents showed up, witnesses said police again fired tear gas into the mourners.

He said curfew has been imposed in the Nowhatta area of the city, while restrictions under Section 144 CrPc were in force in Rainawari, Safakadal, Khanyar, MR Gunj, Maisuma and Kralkhud police station areas of Srinagar.

Friday's incident was the second of its kind in recent weeks.

During the period, 314 people were injured due to the use of brute force including firing of bullets, pellets and teargas shells by the Indian army, paramilitary and police personnel on peaceful protesters.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, a disputed Himalayan territory divided between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan but claimed by both in its entirety.

The duo was taken to SKIMS hospital at Soura here where one of them, Kaiser Bhat, succumbed to his injuries around midnight last night.
