Kerala getting ready for 2nd wave of Nipah outbreak

There was more bad news as Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja has also warned of a possible second outbreak.

"Officials in the state health department have confirmed that the message being circulated among people regarding Nipah virus is false and was passed around to create panic", he said.

"We have to be very cautious", she was reported as saying. The latest victim for the deadly Nipah Virus is a 39-year-old woman from Thalasseri who has been under care at Kozhikode Medical College.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to Nipah virus in Kerala rose to 16 on Thursday.

However, soon other reports surfaced that she had died of other causes and did not carry the Nipah virus.

While schools and colleges in Kozhikode will remain closed until June 12, schools in Wayanad will stay shut until June 5.

According to PTI, the number of samples tested for Nipah virus is 196, of which 178 have tested negative.

On Friday, six more persons in Kozhikode were admitted to hospital with symptoms of Nipah, Saritha said. As of now, there are no NiV positive patients in Kozhikode district. The name of the village was Kampung Sungai Nipah, hence the name Nipah virus, informed Dr. Jay Deshmukh in an event organised by IMA. Kozhikode District Collector U.V. Jose said a high- level meeting to be held on Saturday would decide on the reopening of schools in the district. The team recommended enlisting and daily follow-up of all contacts. Eleven of them have shown symptoms and are under quarantine while about 1,500 suspects are under home quarantine, reported NDTV.
