Apple hits hard on privacy, Memoji in new iOS update

"So this year, we're shutting that down", Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, told the audience at WWDC 2018.

Today NPR spoke directly with Apple CEO Tim Cook about the revelations that hardware makers had access to personal data in the Facebook app. NPR's Laura Sydell was there and joins us now. And when users turn on the Do Not Disturb feature in iOS 12, they will be able to configure it so it blocks all of their notifications until they turn it off. The newly-introduced Screen Time feature is part of Apple's Digital Health initiative. Safari, for example, now has the ability to remove social media buttons from websites which helps prevent companies like Facebook track users around the web. These buttons make it easy to share web content, but they also let social networks collect user data - something Apple has been cracking down on in recent years. In a statement, Apple said iTunes will be home to the "largest collection of Dolby Atmos supported movies anywhere", and those titles will be updated for free.

Facebook has had to rethink its relationship to such third-party data providers and developers. On March, the company grappled with the privacy scandal that was the Cambridge Analytica story which led to an "inappropriate" collection of data of upto 87 million people.

Even screencapping videos will not be quicker from the keyboard shortcut, rather than going through QuickTime to screen record. Apple also promised to remove cookies which act as a tracking code for many websites out of Safari completely.

Apple is also limiting what is called "fingerprinting", which is created to allow companies to follow certain device activity from one site to the next.

The deals were forged before most people had access to the Facebook app on their phones, and allowed manufacturers to offer popular Facebook features on mobile, such as "like" buttons and messaging.

Users can view and control how they spend their time on apps, set time limits and more. While Facebook generates revenue from ads targeted with detailed information about users, Apple makes most of its money selling hardware products.

In terms of measuring the success of the iPhone, "We've never been focused on usage as a key parameter", Cook said.

Apple's software upgrades also include features that help users understand how much time they are spending on their devices, amid concerns of growing smartphone "addiction".

The Photos app in iOS 12 will take photo face recognition a step further by making suggestions on who you might want to share the photos with, depending on the subject.
