Shin Bet thwarts terror attack guided by operative in Syria

Israel's Shin Bet security service says it has uncovered a plot to target Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the Shin Bet, Rashdah planned to carry out "significant terrorist attacks against a variety of targets" which included Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

He received orders from a terrorist in Syria and also planned to carry out terror attacks against USA consulate buildings in Jerusalem and a Canadian delegation visiting Jerusalem as part of a training program for the Palestinian Authority security forces.

Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, 30, an Israeli-Arab citizen, was arrested in April and indicted last week, the Israel Security Agency, or Shin Bet, announced for the first time on Tuesday after a gag order on the case was lifted.

In a statement issued, the security service indicated that working on orders from operatives overseas, Rashdeh planned to carry out a number of significant terror attacks against a variety of targets. The Shin Bet revealed on Tuesday that a terror cell conspiring to assassinate senior Israeli officials was arrested.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were searching the building to see if anyone still was inside the area. The cause of the fire was not immediately known and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

An indictment was filed on 27 May against the Palestinian and others involved in the alleged attacks.

"Our Shin Bet is one of the finest organizations in the world", he said in a statement.

There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu, who is now on an official visit to France.
