GOP seeks to avoid shutout in race for California governor

California Democrats overcame quirks in the state's electoral system and managed to mount challenges to Republicans in most key Congressional races, as voters in eight USA states chose candidates for November's midterm elections.

Because of the massive outpouring of Democratic candidates in the wake of Trump's election in 2016, the party was faced with the very real possibility in a number of swing congressional districts of splintering the vote between so many candidates that the more limited number of Republicans running secured both of the top two spots. While the latest results ensure Republicans a spot in the California gubernatorial race, Cox still faces long odds in a state where Democrats are increasingly dominant.

California was among eight states holding primary contests on Tuesday.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy pointed to a recall election in which Republican assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang was elected to the state Senate by a landslide, while the incumbent Democrat, Josh Newman, was ousted after voting for a 12-cents-per-gallon gas tax. NY has one of the most convoluted election systems in the country, part of which entails holding primaries for federal and state offices on separate days. In a crowded and competitive race - and there are many - it's possible that two candidates from the same party advance to the runoff in some districts, leaving the other party with no candidate on the November ballot.

In the central state of Iowa, Democrat businessman Fred Hubbell will represent his party in the governorship race against incumbent Republican Kim Reynolds, who took over the reins after former governor Terry Branstad was appointed the USA ambassador to China.
