Trump calls for end to Russian expulsion from G7

The G-7 used to be the G-8, when Russian Federation was a member along with Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan.

Before arriving at the meeting of the group, which some suggest Trump is pushing from the Group of Seven into "G-6 plus one", he further stirred the pot by asking why Russian Federation was excluded. And while his critics say Trump is suspiciously soft on Putin, the president told reporters Friday: "I have been Russia's worst nightmare".

A French presidential source said Trump's proposal did not seem "coherent" in view of the latest economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Moscow. While G7 leaders confronted Mr Trump with a slew of data on imports and exports in a bid to sway his thinking, Mr Trump countered his own numbers and held his position that the United States was at a disadvantage on global trade, an official who followed the talks said.

"We're going to deal with the unfair trade practices".

Trump said previously his summit with Kim would be more of a get-to-know-you event, but hopes are that it will pave the way toward North Korea's eventual denuclearization.

The summit has already been dubbed the "G6 plus one" due to Mr Trump's isolation over trade and his decision to pull the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Trump and other world leaders don't agree on a wide range of issues from trade to the environment as well as Iran and the construction of a new United States embassy in Jerusalem.

Germany has suggested making accommodations over trade with the USA for fear of triggering a ratcheting up of tensions over cars that would embroil companies like BMW and Mercedes.

"We have little tests every once in a while when it comes to trade".

He spent Friday participating in the rituals of the G-7, including the formal greeting by host Trudeau, a group photo in front of the sparkling St. Lawrence River and a working lunch of Arctic char and buckwheat salad.
