The White House wants North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to commit to a timetable to surrender his country's nuclear arsenal when he meets President Donald Trump next week in Singapore, a high-stakes summit that could last as long as two days - or just minutes.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Tuesday that the summit will be held June 12 at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

Trump told reporters at an Oval Office event that plans for what will be the first meeting between a serving US president and a North Korean leader, were "moving along very well". "But as the president said, they were interesting, and we feel like things are continuing to move forward and good progress has been made".

"I don't think one meeting next week in Singapore can certainly unlock the entire situation on the Korean peninsula", he said.

The historic summit will take place on June 12 in Singapore, in the latest twist in a high-stakes diplomatic drive by the United States to curtail Pyongyang's nuclear arms programme.

The demand list begins by calling on Kim to "dismantle and remove every single one of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons".

He says the tough line forced the North Korean leader to soften his stance.

"We're not paying for their expenses", she said. We are going to start a process. We can go fast.

During his two-day visit to Pyongyang, Dr Balakrishnan will also call on Kim Yong Nam, the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, said Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Wednesday.

Some Singapore residents were concerned that the arrival of a number of leaders and diplomats could put their lives in convenience because of the summit but others remained indifferent towards it, the Global Times report said.

After meeting Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the DPRK's ruling Workers' Party of Korea, Trump told the media Friday that he had not liked the term "maximum pressure" as ties with the DPRK had been improving.
