Iceland's first experience of a World Cup comes against an all-time great perhaps facing his last chance to win one as the underdogs take on Argentina and Lionel Messi in their Group D opener Saturday.

As it was, though, Hannes Thor Halldorsson saved Messi's kick, and so Argentina began Russian Federation 2018 with a 1-1 draw against a nation making its World Cup debut.

And aside from his penalty miss, Messi made some unwanted World Cup history by failing to score from no less than 11 shots.

Sixty-four minutes in, Messi had his chance to stamp his authority on the contest from the spot after being clipped in the box.

The draw was sweeter the more as goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson kept out Lionel Messi's penalty to claim a famous result here in Russian Federation.

Iceland continued to write their fantastic footballing fairy-tale, recovering from 1-0 down to score their maiden World Cup goal and notch their first point against one of the tournament's most formidable opponents.

Messi misses penalty as Iceland hold Argentina for famous draw
Iceland may be the smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup , but Sampaoli was not underestimating his opponents. Iceland are in one of the tournament's toughest groups, featuring Croatia and Nigeria, as well as Messi's Argentina .

The lead lasted just four minutes though as sloppy defending allowed Iceland to work the ball to Alfred Finnbogason for a simple tap in.

Argentina went in search of a second goal and in the 21st minute, goalkeeper Halldorsson comfortably gathered Messi's curling shot from 25 yards out.

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli took the surprising decision to name his line-up a day before the match, handing starts to Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

The South Americans are eager to replicate their success from the last World Cup, where they travelled all the way to the final before losing to Germany in added time.

And Hannes Halldorsson joined Finnbogason in the country's footballing folklore by thwarting Messi from the penalty spot in the second half to preserve a memorable point. "There are a lot of romantic things in our heads now we start to play Argentina".

Argentina had pulled out of their final pre-World Cup warm up game with Israel after intense protests and threats from the Palestinians after Israel chose to move the game to Jerusalem. "It could have given us the lead and that could have changed the match", Messi said.

Once the World Cup is over and the players begin to return from their holidays, preparation will begin for the 2018/19 campaign. Last season's encounters ended in a victory apiece with both sides claiming victories in their neighbours' own back yard.

"To evaluate and characterize his work is hard", said Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli.

Iceland's strategy of long-range counterattacks and pressuring the Argentines' shaky backline seems to be working. Now they are up against Lionel Messi and it will be fascinating to see how they get on.

"Maybe we needed to be more creative in the first half".

Lionel Messi's Argentina will underestimate Iceland at their peril, coach Heimir Hallgrimsson warned on Friday, saying the minnows are ready to spring another surprise in Russian Federation.

"If someone is surprised (by that) then, they don't know much about Iceland football".

Adding feminine flair to the look was a matching-toned Philip Treacy flat-brimmed fascinator and a white Carolina Herrera clutch. Standing next to Prince William on the balcony, the couple kept it formal with Catherine placing her hands in front of her body.
