At least 5 dead after SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashes, sheriff says

At least five people were killed after an SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashed following a high-speed chase near the Texas-Mexico border, the sheriff said. During a press conference, Boy said 14 people were in the vehicle, including the driver and passenger. A fifth person died at a San Antonio hospital.

Officials said the SUV driver has been arrested by Homeland Security agents.

The crash was reported when Border Patrol agents attempted to stop an SUV in Dimmit County, reports said.

Boyd said his officers have dealt with the driver before, adding he was scouting the area earlier to try and pick up immigrants. The vehicle was traveling around 100 miles per hour, the sheriff said.

This SUV was packed with undocumented immigrants as it crashed trying to escape border patrol.

The other 12 passengers were undocumented immigrants, Boyd said.

Four more were transported to local hospitals, News 4 reported. But along with that, there needs to be cameras.

Footage from a motorist who witnessed the crash and posted video to Facebook shortly after shows at least four bodies on the ground, the mangled Chevrolet and several Border Patrol vehicles at the scene.

CNN reports they reached out to Yolanda Choates, a spokeswoman for US Customs and Border Protection, but she directed all comments back to the sheriff's department.
