Fan injured by Phillie Phanatic's hot dog cannon during game

From deep within the bowels of the inevitable comes this: A fan has been injured by a projectile from the Phillie Phanatic's hot dog cannon.

As is a normal part of his schtick, the mascot was shooting hot dogs into the stands using an oversized cannon-type tool when one sailed in the direction of Kathy McVay of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

You've heard of people getting by foul balls at baseball stadiums, but one Philadelphia Phillies' fan says it wasn't a ball, but a flying hot dog that left her with a black eye!

"It just came out of nowhere. I understand a baseball, but not a hot dog", she said with a quiet laugh.

On Monday night, a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals would become extremely risky for a fan in the stands and she would be sent to the hospital as a result. A shoulder injury kept her from catching the hot dog or swatting it away.

"Just to be aware, because you never know", McVay told ABC 6.

She went to the emergency room that night to make sure she didn't suffer a concussion. "It's very sore", she said.

The Phillies apologized to McVay and offered her tickets to any game, according to CBS.

"I have a small hematoma under my eye", McVay explained WPVI TV in Philadelphia. "It's going to go down the side of my face", she told ABC 6.

But O'Neal doesn't think James needs to worry about winning more championships because his legacy is already established. His mentality now is probably is: 'I want to get four before Steph [Curry ] does.' That's probably his mentality now.

McVay realizes some might get a laugh at her expense out of the situation, and she understands. The team added that the Phanatic mascot feels "terrible" about it.
