North Korean defector says Kim Jong Un ‘can trick the world’

The decision to halt military exercises in South Korea has bewildered many current and former U.S. defence officials, who learnt about it only when Mr Trump announced it in Singapore, after the summit with Mr Kim. So far the remains of 334 servicemen have been identified from the bones and personal effects handed over by Pyongyang, and about 5,000 more are thought to be scattered around North Korean territory.

Americans also have mixed feelings about Trump's announcement that he would end military exercises with South Korea while negotiations with North Korea are ongoing, with about 3 in 10 in favor and 3 in 10 opposed.

South Korea urged North Korea on Wednesday to present a plan with concrete steps toward denuclearization, raising the pressure on its leader Kim Jong Un as he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a visit created to convey the countries' growing closeness.

Mr. Kim also pledged to return the remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-1953 Korean War.
