Worst nightmare: Woman found alive in morgue

TimesLive reported how a mortuary source said that colleagues had loaded the bodies into the fridges and were filling in forms' when one returned to check on them.

Distress Alert operations manager Gerrit Bradnick confirmed that the woman was pronounced dead, but said the paramedics followed all the proper protocols and the woman simply showed no signs of life.

The ambulance company whose paramedics declared her dead have denied there is any proof of negligence.

The woman, who was not identified, was thought to be mortally wounded when she and others were ejected June 24 after a driver lost control of the auto they were traveling in.

"Equipment used to determine life showed no form of life on the woman", he stressed.

Mr Bradnick told AFP paramedics did "all the right checks".

The victim has not been named, but the BBC reports that her family is demanding answers because, thus far, they say authorities have offered them no "clarity" regarding how the massive mistake was made.

The woman's not the first person to be declared dead in South Africa but later found alive in a morgue.

It is also not the first time this has happened in South Africa.

In 2016, a man was declared dead after a auto accident in KwaZulu Natal but was found breathing the next day when his family went to view his body. Seven years ago, a 50-year-old man woke up screaming in an Eastern Cape morgue. He was found breathing the next day, but died five hours after the discovery.
