A woman climbed up the robes of the statue as part of a protest to the separation of migrant families and remained up there for almost three hours before law enforcement managed to take her into custody.

Video shows two officers reaching the protester shortly after 5:30 pm CST near the statue's foot. The group said the woman who climbed to the base of the statue was not involved in the "Abolish ICE" protest. Earlier in the day, Okoumou and dozens of other group members unfurled an "Abolish ICE" banner at the statue's pedestal.

Local media first reported that the woman was among demonstrators opposed to Mr Trump's immigration policy who protested at the site earlier in the day. For almost two hours, she crossed the base of the statue, at times sitting in the folds of the statue's dress and under Lady Liberty's sandal.

As they approached, she initially moved away, took off her shoes and appeared to be starting to climb further. Police officers watched from below as they attempted to coax her down, then brought out a ladder and other climbing gear to physically get to her. NYPD's highly trained emergency services and aviation units were responding along with U.S. Park Police.

For almost three hours, Okoumou crossed the base of Lady Liberty and refused orders from police to get down.

(RNN) - Allegedly protesting against the detainment of child immigrants in Texas, the woman who climbed the bottom of the Statue of Liberty in New York City Wednesday has been taken into custody. "It is depressing. It is outrageous", she said.

The person was spotted trying to scale the Statue of Liberty shortly after seven people were arrested for unfurling a banner labelled "Abolish ICE" at its base, according to USA media.

A member of the protest group Rise and Resist, which hung the banner, told CBS News that the woman who climbed onto the statue's pedestal was a fellow member, CBS News correspondent Anna Werner reports.

A court appearance is expected sometime Thursday.
