Samsung opens world’s largest phone factory in India

This week Samsung is opening what it's calling the world's largest mobile phone factory in the the world's second largest smartphone market.

According to a statement from Samsung, the factory will help almost double its output of mobile devices in India from 68 million units a year to a whopping 120 million units a year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will visit Noida today will inaugurate the New Mobile Manufacturing Plant of Samsung at Noida.

The facility will also double Samsung's capacity in India from 68 million units per year to 120 million units annually.

As Samsung can manufacture its full range of phones at this one facility, the company can react to the local market with the population now preferring phones costing below $250 due to levels of income. The new facility is spread across an area of over 140,000 square meters.

Modi said 30 percent of the phones manufactured at the factory, built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, will be exported.

The Indian mobile phone market grew by 48% YoY in the first quarter of 2018, driven by strong demand from the featurephone segment. On day two of his India visit, Moon will address an India - Korea Business Forum and inaugurate South Korean tech giant Samsung's largest mobile unit in Noida along with PM Modi.

"I have hopes to raise Korea-India relations to that with the four major powers surrounding Korea to match India's global standing", Moon said.

Samsung is expected to create 15,000 jobs through the new manufacturing unit.

The prime minister said India has 40 crore smartphones in use and 32 crore people using the broadband internet.

Last year, Samsung announced budget of Rs 4915 crore to expand the phone manufacturing factory, and now, the plant is ready to manufacture nearly every model of Samsung. Apart from Noida, Samsung also has a factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, five research and development centres and one design centre along with 1.5 lakh retail outlets and 3,000 customer service points.
