West Nile Virus Found In Windsor

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reassures the public that there hasn't been any human cases of West Nile Virus this year, but people should still take the necessary precautions.

The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has confirmed that mosquitos in the county are carrying the West Nile virus.

There were an additional 409 cases of West Nile-positive mosquito pools.

It said samples of mosquitoes collected from the Pooler area tested positive, showing that the virus is circulating in the local population this year.

-Preventing mosquitos from breeding by removing stagnant water from areas such as flowerpots, plastic containers, gutters and downspouts.

Limit outdoor activity at dawn and dusk.

The virus has been detected in the state since 1999.

Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.

DEET - Cover exposed skin with an insect repellent containing the DEET, which is the most effective repellent against mosquito bites.

In addition to birds and humans, horses are also affected by West Nile virus. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms.

Make sure door and window screens fit securely and are free of holes. The 2018 larviciding program will continue throughout the summer season, along with the investigation of standing water complaints and the distribution of educational materials.
