FDA: 400 sickened by parasite in McDonald's salads

The FDA says there are now 109 additional cases - bringing the total number to 395. However, the patients in Connecticut, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia bought their salads in IL while traveling, and the Florida patient bought the salad in Kentucky. So far, 16 of these cases have been severe to the point of hospitalization. It can take people up to a week after ingesting the contaminated food to start feeling symptoms, and many cyclospora infections take weeks to manifest.

Aside from Kentucky, 14 other states are linked to the infection, which can lead to diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements, the FDA said.

McDonald's has also replaced its salad suppliers in those states. Stay on top of breaking news stories with the ABC11 News AppAccording to the Food and Drug Administration, an unused package of Fresh Express salad mix tested positive for Cyclospora. Symptoms can last a few days or several months.

In a statement, Fresh Express said it issued a "precautionary recall" on July 27th.

The company's salad mix recall was connected with a public health alert issued Monday by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service advising consumers that certain salad and wrap products might be contaminated with cyclospora.

The FDA said the investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, and that the agency "is now reviewing distribution and supplier information for romaine and carrots".

On July 13, McDonald's announced it voluntarily stopped selling salads at the impacted restaurants, including Kentucky.
