Israeli minister says Egypt bears equal responsibility for Gaza

That appears not to be sitting well with some officials, and as soon as Hamas' acceptance was announced, some Israelis were already complaining about the proposal to hold talks with Hamas on returning bodies of slain soldiers, insisting the returns should be a precondition to anything else.

Palestinian sources told Ynet that the Hamas meeting took place in response to the Israeli statement and that Hamas leaders warned they could inflict casualties that the Israeli public and government would not be able to tolerate.

Israel's Security Cabinet discussed the pros and cons of a deal with Hamas for several hours, but the Times of Israel reports they didn't reach a conclusion and did not conduct a vote. The more than 2 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip have suffered from a 10-year Israeli-imposed land, air, and sea blockade, which has plunged the small territory into poverty and some of the highest unemployment rates in the world.

The White House said on June 21 that it had discussed with Egypt "the need to facilitate humanitarian relief to Gaza".
