Subtropical Storm Debby forms in the Atlantic

Tropical Storm John formed quickly off the coast of southwestern Mexico around the same time as Ileana, which is just east of John.

Another tropical storm farther out in the Pacific and one in the northern Atlantic posed no threats to land. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the Big Island as Hector was expected to pass Tuesday night and Wednesday as it moved westward.

As of 8 a.m., the center of Hurricane Hector was approximately 495 miles ESE of Hilo at latitude 16.3 N and longitude 148.5 W, moving west at approximately 16 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service says Hector is expected to pass roughly 150 miles south of the Big Island on Wednesday.

The NHC issued a tropical storm warning Wednesday for Hawaii County, and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency advised residents to prepare an emergency kit that includes at least a 14-day supply of food, water and other necessities.

Meanwhile, a bushfire on the Big Island doubled in size overnight and has burned through more than 600 hectares of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Even if El Nino fizzles, said Klotzbach, "we believe that the hurricane-unfavorable conditions in the Atlantic are likely to persist over the next several months". A turn toward the northeast is forecast by this afternoon, and that motion should continue into Thursday.
