The fire, which is roughly the size of Charlotte, North Carolina, was 59% contained as of Sunday morning.

About 3,900 firefighters, including a crew of 40 volunteers from New Zealand, had been battling the fire, contending with temperatures in the high 90s and winds gusting to 25 miles per hour.

Mandatory evacuations remain in place across the state for around 11,120 individuals.

Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, was charged with aggravated arson and criminal threats, among other crimes, for allegedly starting the fire.

After a month of burning, the Ferguson Fire has singed 96,457 acres across three national forests and private land.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Orange and Riverside counties, and several school districts have canceled classes due to fire warnings and unhealthy air quality.

A firefighter from Utah was killed while fighting a wildfire in California Monday.

The fatality marks the sixth firefighter to be killed in California's wildfires this year alone.

The unidentified firefighter was killed yesterday while battling the Ranch Fire, one of two blazes that make up the Mendocino Complex, which has already burned about 349,000 acres, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.

Five civilians were killed in the Carr Fire as well, including a worker for Pacific Gas & Electric. The Carr fire stood at 65 percent containment after blackening 207,000 acres.

As the family fled their property during the Carr Fires west of Redding, the father warned his daughter that their pet fish, named Grant, probably hadn't survived.

"I would describe him as a master of his craft". I've been to a lot of fires and this is just something else.

"We've had a number of safety issues, in terms of, very large diameter trees that are falling and making it hazardous for crews", Park said.

Cal Fire predicts the Mendocino fire will be fully contained by September 1. It has lasted almost a month and is 83% contained.

The road into Yosemite Valley was reopened on Tuesday for the first time since July 25, along with two highways into the park.

"We'd like to express our honest gratitude to the firefighters and Incident command teams for their great efforts in suppressing the Ferguson Fire". They have worked long, hard hours to help save lives and property.
