Authorities: Mollie Tibbetts' body believed to have been found

A 24-year-old man described as an illegal immigrant from Mexico was charged with murder on Tuesday after he led detectives to the body of a woman, believed to be that of a college student who went missing a month ago, in an Iowa cornfield, state investigators said.

The case unraveled in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as reports emerged in the morning that authorities had found Tibbetts' body, followed by an afternoon announcement that Bahena-Rivera had been arrested and charged.

The 20-year-old went missing on July 18 while she was on a run in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa.

Police say a man in the US illegally is charged with murder in the death of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts.

She had been staying at Jack's house at the time to watch his dogs, and he raised the alarm after she failed ot show up for work the next day.

Dozens of law enforcement officials from local, state and federal agencies were involved in the investigation after the disappearance of Tibbetts, who was last seen jogging in Brooklyn, Iowa on July 18th. Including home surveillance video that showed Mollie out jogging and Rivera's vehicle in the vicinity.

She was going to be a sophomore at the University of Iowa this fall, studying psychology.

A police affidavit attached to an arrest warrant filed Tuesday against murder suspect Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, indicates that Rivera doesn't seem to remember much about the attack he's accused of perpetrating on Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts.

Tibbetts, a 20-year-old student at the University of Iowa, has been missing since July 18. "We were able to pull him in" and conducted an interview with Rivera, he added.

President Donald Trump referred to Rivera's being in the country illegally during a campaign speech for a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in West Virginia. That led officials to Rivera.

"I was saddened and outraged to hear of Mollie Tibbetts' death at the hands of an illegal alien", Kobach said.

Spokesman Dane Lang said Tuesday night that Yarrabee Farms is a "small family farm" owned by him and his father, Craig Lang, who has always been a prominent Iowa farmer and political figure.

He has lived in the area of Tibbett's hometown for about four to six years, the Register reported.

The dairy farm where Rivera was employed is owned in part by Craig Lang, a prominent Iowa Republican who ran for secretary of agriculture this summer, CNN affiliate World Health Organization reported.
