Israel reports West Nile virus, 67 people hospitalized

West Nile is primarily transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on a bird that carries the virus in its blood, health officials said.

Health officials have confirmed single cases of West Nile virus in Duval and Nassau counties, according to the Florida Department of Health. To date this year, Public Health Ontario has reported five human cases in the province.

The virus is spread to humans who are bitten by an infected mosquito.

Most people bitten by an infected mosquito will have no symptoms, while about 20 percent develop a mild flu-like illness. Most people will not experience symptoms. The mosquito pools were collected August 6 through August 8.

Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water.

Once in water - as little as a spoon's worth - mosquitos will go from larvae to a biting menace in a mere three days. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently. If they're not, fix any broken screens as needed to keep the pests out of your house. Use as directed and consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already issued a warning over virus' risk of spreading across the continent.
