A blockbuster primary in Florida and three-way fight in Arizona

The death of Arizona Sen.

The stage is set for two historic elections in November after Tuesday night's primaries in Arizona and Florida.

As in many GOP races across the country, candidates in the Republican primary competed to prove their loyalty to President Trump.

However, Flake, who is retiring at the end of his term, had no such exchange with McSally and has not endorsed a candidate since Roy Moore and now-Senator Doug Jones ran against each other for the Alabama seat.

All three Republicans had distanced themselves from McCain, who frequently feuded with Trump, and Ward suggested that his family's announcement on Friday that he was stopping medical treatment was timed to hurt her campaign. McCain died the next day.

Primaries for governor on both sides of the aisle may remind voters why Florida is still the nation's ultimate political battleground. Jeff Flake in Arizona will produce a first this November no matter which party wins.

McSally came the closest to an endorsement from President Trump in the race against two other candidates who had publicly expressed support for the president.

Suspect in 1998 murder of Dutch boy appears in court in Spain
He is being held in a Spanish police cell pending extradition back to the Netherlands after his arrest on Sunday afternoon. Nicky Verstappen, 11, was found dead near a campsite in the southern Dutch province of Limburg on August 10, 1998.

Arpaio, one of Trump's staunchest supporters, received a presidential pardon after he was convicted of contempt for refusing to obey a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos.

But the race to embrace the polarizing Trump could make it harder in November for the Republican victor.

McCain's death has highlighted anew the shift in the Republican Party since he captured the GOP nomination for president in 2008.

To win the governor's office for the first time since 1999, Democrats will have to come together quickly. In a low-key event at a Greek restaurant near his home, he said he'd dedicate himself to ensuring President Donald Trump gets re-elected in 2020. The CNN survey found that 67 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of McCain, while just 33 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the GOP senator. Arpaio's finish is even more embarrassing, especially with his third-place finish in Maricopa, where he served as sheriff for 24 years.

Trump spared Arpaio a possible jail sentence past year by pardoning his federal conviction stemming from his immigration patrols.

After Ms McSally's victory, however, Mr Trump tweeted: "Martha, a great US Military fighter jet pilot and highly respected member of Congress, WINS BIG". McSally, Ward and Arpaio all campaigned on their various connections to Trump during the primary.

The victor of the GOP primary is likely to face Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, who faces only token primary opposition.

He said Ms. McSally had to tilt to the right to win the primary, leaving her too far from center to win the general election.

Voters elected U.S. Reps. She also had an early fundraising advantage and support from former Democratic Reps.

The three-term Republican congressman who makes frequent Fox News appearances is known as an immigration hard-liner in a state where Hispanic voters hold outsized sway. On the Republican side, DeSantis hopes an endorsement from Trump will outweigh Putnam's attacks on DeSantis as an out-of-touch creature of Washington.

But Ward dominated headlines leading up to the primary.

Graham leads a diverse field.

On the Democratic side, liberal champion Andrew Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, bested a crowded field that included establishment favorite Gwen Graham, the former congresswoman and daughter of Florida political icon Bob Graham.

Disgraced ex-Trump lawyer Cohen crowdfunding legal bills
In an election-style rally Tuesday evening in West Virginia, Trump did not mention Cohen, instead invoking the death of Tibbetts. They argued that the president was not directly implicated, even though Cohen said in court that he and Trump had coordinated.

In Oklahoma, the race for governor between former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and businessman Kevin Stitt could hinge on which candidate voters believe is more loyal to Trump. Cornett is running on his government experience, while Stitt has campaigned as the outsider, self-funding his campaign and hitting Cornett for not supporting Trump enough.
