KDHE: Most of Kansas at 'high risk' for West Nile Virus

A Cambridge woman has been diagnosed with West Nile virus, one of four human cases of the mosquito-borne illness reported so far in MA, the city's Public Health Department said Tuesday.

"We will also do extra trapping in the area and send the samples to the Mississippi State Health Department for testing", Fayard said.

According to the release, there were 16 confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in Pennsylvania in 2016. The mosquitoes then infect the humans and animals they bite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state this week announced an adult from Cumberland County tested positive for the virus and is recovering in the hospital.

Symptoms of WNV include headache, fever, neck discomfort, muscle and joint aches, swollen lymph nodes and a rash - that usually develop three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Two of them, a Suffolk County resident in her 40s and a Worcester County woman in her 70s, were admitted to hospitals. Although there have been no cases of WNV reported to KDHE in 2018 there have been more than 600 cases of the most severe form of WNV and 30 deaths in Kansas from 1999-2017.

West Nile has impacted 58 IL counties this year in animal and mosquito cases.
