The National Hurricane Center said Norman was located 455 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California Tuesday night and was moving west-northwest at 10 mph.

The first one is just now rolling off the coast of Africa into the eastern Atlantic and has been classified as a "potential tropical cyclone" by the National Hurricane Center. The system is expected to become a Tropical Storm by tomorrow, with East Coast swell chances likely to start increasing.

According to Met Éireann, however, reports of a tropical storm headed Ireland's way in the coming weeks are somewhat premature, for the time being at least and likely to be wide of the mark.

In an 2 p.m. update, forecasters said the system had sustained winds of 30 miles per hour traveling west at 12 miles per hour.

There were no storm advisories as of Wednesday afternoon and Miriam was expected to begin weakening Friday.

Forecasters are also keeping an eye on a tropical wave in the north-central Caribbean Sea that is producing a large batch of thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service in Miami said models differ on location, timing and rain chances with the wave's arrival still a few days away. The system is expected to continue moving west and northwestward and into the Gulf of Mexico during the next several days.

Of more immediate concern to South Florida is whether Labor Day weekend will be a washout.

The Atlantic basin has been remarkably calm since the middle of August, but the tropics could heat up very soon as we approach the historical peak of hurricane season.
