A disappointed Raikkonen said: "I was quick enough, but unfortunately our rear tyres went and it was a losing battle from that point".

"It's a special place for sure to get the pole position at our home grand prix in front of our fans.it's good today, hopefully tomorrow it's very good, " Raikkonen added. I left him space, but it was me who was the one who spun around.

"I'm really really proud of them, because obviously when you're in a big sea of red and there's the booing and. you notice there's one guy standing there with a flag or there's a kid waving it and you can imagine being surrounded by that, feeling the heat on him", he said.

The incident occurred as Vettel considered passing Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen for the lead on the inside to the chicane only to find Hamilton's Mercedes overtaking him on the outside.

After a dry morning, there was rain in the air. Meanwhile, Gasly and Ricciardo are having a bit of ding-dong behind the German, their cars touching into the chicane for a second time.

Vettel said he was surprised when he inspected the vehicle at the finish.

What a start! Vettel spins, and collides with Hamilton! "Where did he want to go?"

The safety vehicle was deployed and Vettel went into the pits for a new front wing, coming out 18th.

"It looks like the performance that they are able to deploy on one lap is maybe something they can not replicate throughout the race", he said.

Vettel tried to pass Raikkonen right at the start in Sunday's race but the move was fended off by the Finn.

Raikkonen had looked to be in with a chance of his first win in 108 races but he could not resist on worn tyres and had to be content with his 100th podium in F1. He had retaken the lead from Hamilton after an early tussle, but could not pull away despite the Ferrari being the fastest auto on the track.

However, as Vettel reflects on the fact he now trails Hamilton by 30 points with seven races to go, he must be aware that a stronger teammate would actually be a benefit.

Hamilton waited until the end of lap 28 to come in for fresh tires, handing the lead to Bottas who was ahead of a charging Raikkonen. Mercedes's message to new leader Bottas was clear: "Keep Kimi behind you".

It would be easy to see the opening lap collision, with Vettel making another apparent misjudgement, as the key moment but the seeds of Ferrari's misfortune were sown before then.

Bottas finally pitted after 36 laps, leaving Raikkonen leading Hamilton by 0.7 seconds, but both men were nursing their tyres for the finale. He finishes ahead of Raikkonen and Verstappen, but Verstappen's penalty means Bottas will finish on the podium, with Vettel taking fourth.

"It was intense", Hamilton said.

The tifosi, deflated, began heading for the exits.
