Health officials: Sands Resort ordered to remediate Legionella bacteria

New Hampshire health officials issued an order to the Sands Resort in Hampton to take immediate steps to remediate the Legionella bacteria at the resort and notify guests of the bacteria.

Legionnaires' disease is caused by a bacteria known as Legionella, which is commonly found in the natural environment, including freshwater, groundwater and the soil.

The results indicate the bacteria at multiple sources within the Sands Resort water system-not just limited to the hot tub spa, according to DHHS Commissioner Jeffrey A. Meyers.

Fraser Health typically sees about six cases per year of Legionnaires' Disease.

Legionnaires' disease is a treatable using antibiotics for pneumonia.

Symptoms include fever, cough, chills, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, confusion and diarrhea. Most people get better with early treatment, although they may need to be hospitalized. It can not be passed from person to person contact.

Most healthy people don't get sick from the bacteria, but smokers, the elderly and those with pre-existing lung conditions or compromised immune systems are at higher risk.
