"He is a man without comparable peer", Governor Doug Ducey told reporters in Phoenix, with Kyl at his side.

Kyl, who previously served in the Senate for 18 years before leaving in 2013, was tapped by Ducey earlier Tuesday to fill the vacant Arizona Senate seat ahead of 2020, when a special election will be held for a permanent successor to McCain. Jon Kyl to succeed Sen.

Kyl's appointment means the Republican attorney who had been guiding President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through the confirmation process will now have a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation. Kyl's appointment may make it possible for him to vote for the nomination.

The appointee will fill the seat until the next general election in 2020.

"There is no one in Arizona more prepared to represent our state in the U.S. Senate than Jon Kyl", Ducey said in a statement. Kyl's presence in the Senate will give GOP leaders a more of a cushion as they whip votes.

For now, Kyl will pad Republicans' margin in the narrowly divided Senate.

Steelers players not fretting Bell's absence
Maybe it'll be in time for the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro running back to be ready for Sunday's season opener at Cleveland. The idea that Bell's absence would be a distraction was resoundingly dismissed by Pittsburgh players.

McCain, who died of brain cancer on August 25, was last re-elected in 2016; his term will expire in 2022.

The GOP is hoping he'll be a more reliable partisan vote than McCain, whose opposition to a partial repeal of President Obama's health care law pitched the party into turmoil a year ago.

Kyl, 76, served alongside McCain in the Senate from 1995 until 2013 and was a consistent conservative vote.

Kyl is well-respected in Arizona and has been able to avoid numerous battles with activists that complicated McCain's career and that of the state's other senator, Jeff Flake, who is retiring because his feud with Trump made his re-election impossible.

McCain's wife Cindy McCain offered her congratulations to Kyl on Twitter. It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona'.

Doug Cole, a veteran Republican consultant and former McCain aide, said Kyl was a good, safe pick.

Approximately 267,000 pages of Kavanaugh documents from his time serving Bush will be released with the remaining 100,000 documents remaining classified.

"I think McCain would be very happy with the pick". But Ducey said at the news conference it's not clear whether Kyl will remain in the Senate through 2020. "Honors his legacy while putting some major horsepower for Arizona in the seat, at least for now", he said. Barry Goldwater after he had served in the House of Representatives.

But Kyl has also at times been unreserved in his criticism of Trump.

"There is no one in Arizona with the stature of Senator Jon Kyl".

His funeral service Saturday at Washington National Cathedral was in many ways a stern rebuke of Trump, with presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama eulogizing McCain as an iconic statesman who embodied passionate but civil debate, bipartisan compromise and a commitment to American values. "I don't really have a relationship with President Trump".
