A gunman opened fire at a bank building in the U.S. city of Cincinnati Thursday, fatally wounding three people before police shot and killed him, authorities said.

Isaac said Perez died after the first officers on the scene shot him multiple times.

The police chief said he could not say whether the gunman shot himself in addition to being shot by police.

One of the victims died at the scene and five other people are believed to have been injured in the attack.

"This is clearly an act of grotesque violence to innocent people and it should frighten all of us", said Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley. He noted that it "could have been much, much worse" if not for the quick police response to the shooting.
