Three dead, five wounded in Cincinnati shooting; suspect also dead

He said Perez has lived in the Cincinnati area since at least 2015.

A gunman opened fire at a bank building in the U.S. city of Cincinnati Thursday, fatally wounding three people before police shot and killed him, authorities said.

Isaac said Perez died after the first officers on the scene shot him multiple times.

The police chief said he could not say whether the gunman shot himself in addition to being shot by police.

One of the victims died at the scene and five other people are believed to have been injured in the attack.

"This is clearly an act of grotesque violence to innocent people and it should frighten all of us", said Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley. He noted that it "could have been much, much worse" if not for the quick police response to the shooting.

The emergency call about shots fired at 38 Fountain Square was received at 9:10 a.m. Isaac said an individual had entered the loading dock area and fired, then entered the lobby where gunfire was exchanged between the shooter and officers.

Leonard Cain tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that he was about to walk into the bank until someone told him about the shooting.

Reports of an active shooter began to flood the city's 911 lines just after 9 a.m. Thursday.

Streets around Fountain Square were closed, media reported.

Perez is a USA citizen born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, family members said Thursday.

"I made it out to see my kids, to see another day", she said with relief.

Michael Richardson, who works in the bank building, told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he was standing outside the entrance when he heard gunshots in the lobby. "The shots got closer and closer and closer and closer and that's all you can think about is, I'm next, I'm next, I'm next", Janetta Cook, a bakery worker, was quoted by CNN saying. "Then he saw a man in white shirt and brown trousers holding a gun and heard 'rounds of gunfire, '" he wrote. She said she did not know their condition.

Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac says the suspect is Omar Enrique Santa Perez, 29.

The department tweeted it as an "active shooter/officer involved shooting incident". Police at the time advised people in the area to remain on lockdown until notified it was safe to leave.

"I kind of got down on the ground and then all the cops started coming", he said. The Fifth Third Center is a 30-story skyscraper that sits on the square.
