NASA video shows Hurricane Florence from space as it makes landfall

The hurricane, now downgraded to a tropical storm, was blamed by authorities for at least five deaths as of late Friday. A gust of 170kph was recorded at Wilmington airport, surpassing the power of Hurricane Fran two decades ago.

The Wilmington Police Department said Friday that the father was transported to a hospital for treatment. The Duplin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the three people died in separate cars and incidents. When they got to the home, the woman was deceased, Chad McEwen, assistant county manager for Pender County, said.

Hurricane Florence has made landfall in North Carolina, forcing a life-threatening storm surge of floodwater inland and shredding structures in its path.

Wrightsville Beach is the closest beach to Wilmington, and about 10 miles from the coast. A 105 miles per hour wind gust recorded in Wilmington Friday morning was the second-strongest ever.

Georgia, where governor Nathan Deal has now declared an emergency, is also thought to be in the firing line. The Weather Channel reported that about 300,000 have lost power so far.

The North Carolina State Emergency Response Team released a statement Saturday night indicating a, 81-year-old man died in Wayne County after falling and hitting his head as he packed to evacuate on Friday.

"We have people trapped by the storm surge and flooding waters getting to the steps of their house", Parker says.

Florence's circulation was pushing water ashore, especially north of its eye, in coastal or riverside towns like New Bern and Belhaven, turning land to lakes.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", he said.

Gibson said Friday that while she and her family were safe, she and her husband had gotten around 75 calls and texts from others asking for help. She said that count is expected to increase significantly.

"I about jumped out of my skin", he said in a phone interview Friday morning.

"Damaging hurricane-force winds are occurring along portions of the North Carolina coast and are expected to spread to portions of the SC coast" later on Friday.
