Some of the shops only offer a limited selection of salads, sandwiches and snacks, while others have a small selection of groceries, making it more akin to a convenience store.

Inc. has declined to comment on a report that it's looking to open thousands of Amazon Go cashierless convenience stores over the next few years.

Industry analysts note that Amazon is increasingly embracing an omnichannel strategy for its retail business and, on the food side of the equation, would likely seek more physical stores to compete with the brick-and-mortar presence of leading grocery retailers like Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons Cos., Target and Costco. Reports in the past year about Amazon's plans have rattled incumbent players in a wide range of industries, including groceries, pharmacies and specialty office suppliers.

"Amazon needs to figure out how to grow this", said Soper, "but limit the cost because the cost of this technology is extremely expensive right now and so by narrowing the focus on simply prepared food, they can keep the cost down and expand more quickly".

Amazon has already built four stores with the high-tech concept, with their first store opening in Seattle in 2016. It then opened two more in Seattle, and one Chicago.

As a matter of perspective, 7-eleven, the largest convenience store chain in the world operates 8,600 stores in the USA, and in 2017 generated $14.33 billion in USA sales alone. Los Angeles and NY have already been rumoured as cities to host Amazon Go stores. Two more are planned.

Such an expansion could put Amazon back into an investment cycle.

An Amazon spokesperson said "we don't comment on rumors or speculation", in response to GeekWire's inquiry. It now has three in the city and one in Chicago.

The officials told reporters the lower initial tariff rate would give USA businesses time to find new suppliers. The US taxes are targeting Chinese goods that Washington says have benefited from improper industrial policies.

The firm is mostly eyeing urban areas with wealthy young residents who can afford to pay for items that are a little higher priced, but ensure better quality than fast food. "Given Amazon's need to invest in in-store automation technologies, cameras and sensors, we would not be surprised to see the cost toward the higher end of this range", they added.
