Bishop Mulakkal arrested in Kerala nun rape case

Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who has been accused by a nun of rape, was on Thursday relieved by the Vatican from his pastoral duties in Diocese of Jalandhar. "The investigating officer in the nun rape case has found that the bishop has committed the crime", Kottayam Superintendent of Police Hari Sankar told journalists. Earlier this month, she had written to the Vatican's representative in New Delhi, alleging that the bishop was using "political and money power" to "bury" the case.

Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan mounted a sharp attack on the agitating nuns who have been on a sit-in near the Kerala High Court for the last 13 days. When the church failed to take action on this matter, the nun approached the Kerala police.

The bishop has not been charged, but has given interviews denying wrongdoing and saying he wanted to defend his name.

According to India Today, the statement said, "The nun who has complained against the bishop has conspired in connivance with nine others, including five nuns, against the bishop". The nun had claimed that most of the times it was unnatural sex. "They are forcing people to hit the streets to press for justice". One of the nuns, while slamming the police's inaction in nabbing the accused said, "The police have repeatedly taken the statement of the victim nun, but they have taken Franco Mulakkal's statement only once".

She wrote: "We experience neglect from every side".
