ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie is out.

"(But) the government, I must say, has provided no pressure, no opinion, has not been involved in this decision.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said Guthrie's departure was independent from the government, and her replacement would also be independently chosen.

She was given the benefit of the doubt, Faine said, and "most of us were excited ... that a woman clearly on top of new media" was taking the helm.

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has been sacked from the national broadcaster.

"The board wishes to thank Michelle for her contribution to the ABC", said Milne.

McConnell blasts Dems for 'shameful smear campaign' against Kavanaugh
As he builds a case for his innocence, Kavanaugh plans to turn over to the committee calendars from the summer of 1982. The three lawyers are not pleased with but agree to the committee's decision not to call any other witnesses.

Senior journalist Sally Neighbour, executive producer of 4 Corners, tweeted: "Excellent decision".

"In an ideal world, I would like to see our relationship - I think the relationship between the ABC and Government is, on the one hand, hard because of course we need to be independent from government, but it is an important relationship because the government funds us". "This is entirely a board decision".

"While my contract permits the board to terminate my appointment without cause and with immediate effect, I believe there is no justification for the board to trigger that termination clause".

Milne said the ABC must now push ahead with its "Jetstream" project, which involves building the digital infrastructure of the future.

She posted a statement two hours after the ABC announced she had been sacked and added that "at no point have any issues been raised with me" about her staffing changes.

David Anderson, the ABC's director of entertainment and specialist divisions, will act as managing director while a search commences for a new permanent boss.

"I want to see an ABC that's strong and doing its job and well run, and the board does as well", Morrison said. We'll update this story when we know more.

What on earth is the government's explanation for Michelle Guthrie's apparent sacking as head of the ABC.

"This includes refocusing daily journalism away from lifestyle content and "clickbait" and back towards news and current affairs", the union said.

Guthrie used her statement to remind everyone of her efforts since being appointed to the top job in May 2016, and said she was considering her legal options.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek said she was perplexed by the decision and the board's statements had not clarified it.
