Hurricane Rosa Expected To Soak Los Angeles, Increase California Surf

In the south, surf generated by the cyclone off Mexico is expected to build overnight, followed by rain on Monday as Rosa's moisture expands northward from Baja California. It was moving west at 6 miles per hour.

Hurricane Rosa is preparing to dump rain on northwest Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, the National Hurricane Center said.

Rosa weakened from a Category 4 storm Friday. It is expected to be a tropical storm when it nears northern portions peninsula on Monday night. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the peninsula's east coast, from Bahia de los Angeles to San Felipe.

The rainfall is expected to hit Arizona late Sunday and early Monday, before the rain becomes more widespread into the middle of the week. "Rosa's remnants will then move quickly across the Desert Southwest on Tuesday", the NHC said.

Areas covered by watches due to what the weather service's Las Vegas office calls "abundant tropical moisture from Hurricane Rosa" include southern Nevada, southeastern California, southwestern and central Utah and the western two-thirds of Arizona.

Previously a powerful Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 miles per hour, Rosa weakened over the weekend and is expected to bring potentially heavy rain, blustery winds and thunderstorms to the Valley from Sunday through Tuesday, forecasters said. Other areas of the Desert Southwest including the central Rockies and the Great Basin are likely to get 1 to 2 inches, with isolated totals up to 4 inches possible.
