Trami, the 24th typhoon of the season, swept the southern islands of Okinawa and Kyushu Sunday morning, and maintained wind gusts of up to 213 kilometers per hour (132 mph) as it moved northwards, according to the JMA.

At least 386 flights were cancelled mainly in western Japan, according to public broadcaster NHK.

As of 7 p.m. on September 30, the typhoon was situated about 90 kilometers west of Cape Shionomisaki in the western Japan prefecture of Wakayama, and was moving northeast at 50 kilometers per hour.

Syria says new air defences will make Israel think twice
The Iranians were willing to pay, but Netanyahu and former US President Barack Obama's pressure on Putin stopped the deal in 2013. For its part, Israel is wary of Iran's growing influence in Syria, which is bringing its archenemy closer to its borders.

The worst impacts of Trami will be on Saturday night across the southern Ryukyu Islands as Trami is expected to pass between Miyako and Okinawa.

Kansai International Airport in Osaka, western Japan, which was heavily flooded by a typhoon last month, said it had closed its runways from 11am (02:00 GMT) on Sunday until 6am on Monday.

As the typhoon barrelled east, rail authorities took the highly unusual step of cancelling evening train services in Tokyo, one of the world's busiest networks, urging passengers to shelter indoors when the storm hits. All services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line were suspended after around 5 p.m. on September 30, according to Central Japan Railway Co.

The airport also was closed for the latest typhoon.

It's the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan in 25 years. Some Tokyo train lines stopped running even before 8 p.m. Sunday, with the central Tokyo Yamanote loop line and others halting at 8 p.m., according to notices on the East Japan Railway website. The airport only fully reopened on September 21 following previous storms.

The tropical cyclone is classified as a "very strong" typhoon, the second-highest on the Japan Meteorological Agency scale.

Classed as a "strong" typhoon, Trami pounded Kagoshima on the western tip of Japan early Sunday, causing minor injuries - such as cuts from broken windows and people knocked over by gusts. More than 80 people were injured, it also said.

The typhoon is projected to hit regions ravaged earlier this month by Typhoon Jebi, which caused landslides and floods and temporarily shut Kansai International Airport.
