The dramatic Senate floor announcement by perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican ended the suspense over a tortuous, election-season battle that had left Kavanaugh's fate in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him.

Minutes after Collins' announced her support, Manchin announced his backing of the judge. Under rules approved past year, 50 votes are needed for a majority in the procedural vote, which will be followed by a debate on the nomination before a final, definitive confirmation vote.

Collins also noted that Kavanaugh "received rave reviews" for his performance and judicial temperament as a judge in Washington D.C.

He credited the work of all three with "expanding what is possible at the extremes of time, space and forms of matter". The Nobel Prizes have come under criticism in recent years for the lack of female laureates across all categories.

In public testimony last week, Prof Christine Blasey Ford said she had been assaulted by Judge Kavanaugh when they were both teenagers in 1982. Kavanaugh has denied all the charges.

She went on to say that the allegations "fail to meet the more likely than not standard".

But after the Federal Bureau of Investigation released its report late Wednesday, after less than a week of investigating, Flake said it had found "no additional corroborating information" against Kavanaugh.

The organization CrowdPAC is fundraising online to support whomever Democrats nominate to challenge the ME senator in 2020.

Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations. Smyth, two people who Ford said were at the gathering of teenagers where Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her.
