"The injured are being treated at area hospitals", the civil protection agency said, noting that some of the injuries were sustained when people panicked after the quake.

In 2010, Haiti was hit by a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude quake that killed approximately 230,000 people.

By sunrise Sunday, 12 people had died, 135 were injured and dozen of buildings damaged or destroyed.

A strong aftershock sent panicked residents fleeing into the streets on Sunday - hours after a 5.9-magnitude natural disaster killed at least 12 people along Haiti's northwest coast. The full extent of the damage was not clear though in parts of Port-de-Paix residents tried to go about their business normally on Sunday.

The Cuban ambassador to Haiti, Luis Castillo, confirmed to Prensa Latina that the embassy went undamaged. Tens of thousands of people are still displaced because of the natural disaster.

Etanvie Dimorne, a 50-year-old mason, said people have to rebuild stronger given the earthquakes that have hit Haiti.

Impoverished Haiti, where many live in tenuous circumstances, is especially vulnerable to earthquakes. After shocks were reported in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Pierre Jacques Baudre, a farmer and father of seven, said he was afraid to return to his home after one wall built with rocks and cement crumbled.

Four people were said to have been killed in and around the town of Gros-Morne further south, including a woman who died from a heart attack. Some houses were destroyed, it said. Parliamentarian Alcide Audne told The Associated Press that two of the deaths occurred in the auditorium.

Damage was also reported at the Saint-Michel church in Plaisance and the police station in Port-de-Paix.
