Khashoggi is a resident of the United States and has been living in Washington, D.C. The former editor-in-chief of a Saudi newspaper and then an advisor to Saudi government officials, in the previous year Khashoggi had written columns critical of the Saudi goverment in the Post.

Pro-government Turkish media published the names and photographs of 15 Saudi men who allegedly made a mysterious one-day trip to Istanbul on private jets on the day that Mr Khashoggi vanished at the Saudi consulate. According to the New York Times, officials in Istanbul believe he was killed on orders from the royal court of Saudi Arabia.
