PS4 Messaging Bug is Bricking Consoles

Reports have been coming in overnight on the PS4 subreddit of a message that is reportedly crashing PS4 consoles.

The first report of this specific bug was from a Reddit user who, after playing an online match of Rainbow Six: Siege, received a cryptic message from a member of the opposing team. Deleting the messages from a mobile app can also help you avoid a bricked PS4, rather than opening the messages on the console itself.

So maybe it's an idea to check in on your Privacy options and switch messages to "Friends Only" or "No-One" for now, until there is more information available about this story. "Messages" via the Sony Entertainment Network website and clicking the edit button near Messages to change your default settings. We all have had to factory reset.

The simplest solution to prevent this from happening in future is to turn off messages from folks you don't know.

In order to protect your hardware from this kind of attack, users are encouraged to change their message settings to receive messages from "friends only" or "no one" under Personal Info/Messages, according to Polygon.
