Illinois Reports Another Case Of The Polio-Like Illness AFM

A 10th child in IL has now been diagnosed with the poliolike condition known as acute flaccid myelitis, which causes paralysis and difficulty swallowing, according to state health officials.

"All parents must take simple steps to protect their children, especially those who are immune-compromised or have respiratory problems, to avoid becoming infected", said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker.

Health officials say enteroviruses (polio and non-polio), West Nile virus (WNV) and viruses in the same family as WNV may cause AFM.
