Rowland, a registered sex offender, was convicted of enticing a minor over the internet and attempted forcible sexual abuse in March 2004. He was released from prison in 2013.

McCluskey's mother said her daughter had dated Rowland for about a month but ended the relationship when she learned he had lied about his age, name and criminal history.

Monday night, he encountered her on the U of U campus.

"It was assigned out to a detective". He declined to disclose further details on the report.

Brophy told reporters on Tuesday police didn't have a current address for Rowland, but a department of corrections spokeswoman said he was living at the address listed in the sex offender registry.

"I don't know how we're going to get on without her but we have to", McCluskey's grandfather Ross Rudeen said.

McCluskey was shot and killed Monday night by Melvin Rowland, with whom she had previously been involved in a relationship.

"Now all of us humans and all of us animals will no longer have the opportunity to experience the abundance of [McCluskey's] love and support", he said.
