The four-time Paris champion, who next faces Marin Cilic in the last eight on Friday, was guaranteed a return to the ranking summit when Nadal withdrew from Paris with an abdominal injury on Wednesday.

"It's been a hard year for me in terms of injuries, and so I'd prefer to avoid doing anything drastic", he told the media minutes before his intended match against compatriot Fernando Verdasco who will instead face Tunisian lucky loser Malek Jaziri. "And, of course, I'm very, very happy and proud about it", said Djokovic.

"I always believe in myself, but it was highly improbable, considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court".

If he wins that, against Kei Nishikori, he could face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals - but Federer is thinking more about winning the season-ending ATP Finals, which start November 11.

Cilic fired 29 winners to advance to the last eight for the third straight year.

"I am very close to London, to securing my spot mathematically", said Cilic, who is part of the Croatia team facing France in the Davis Cup final at the end of this month.

The Croat reached 2016 semifinals here upsetting Novak Djokovic, and a win would increase even more his chances to be at the ATP Finals in London.
