Britons would back ‘remain’ in new Brexit vote: Channel 4 poll

The report says senior sources say the prime minister has secured private concessions from Brussels that will allow her to keep the whole of Britain in a customs union, avoiding a hard border in Northern Ireland, the as yet unresolved issue blocking a future trading deal with the EU.

In a public message to Mr Varadkar, Ms McDonald warned the backstop "cannot be diluted".

The phone call followed a report by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper that May's Brexit Minister Dominic Raab had privately demanded the right to pull Britain out of the backstop after three months.

But ministers are now insisting that the backstop agreement must contain a mechanism for the United Kingdom to terminate the backstop without the agreement of the EU.

"The Tanaiste couldn't have been clearer that a time-limited backstop or a backstop that could be ended by the United Kingdom unilaterally would never be agreed to by Ireland or the EU".

By Friday, the Guardian reports, the European Union will have to decide whether there has been enough progress towards a deal to justify scheduling an emergency summit later this month to finalise it.
