Australian Man Killed In Third Shark Attack In Popular Tourist Area

A 33-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark off the north Queensland coast, in the same area where two other people were attacked in September.

A male patient is now being airlifted to Mackay Hospital with significant leg and wrist injuries following a shark attack in waters near #CidHarbour which occurred at 5.37pm.

He was then loaded into a waiting helicopter and taken to Mackay Base Hospital arriving in a critical condition.

Australia has seen a total of 17 shark attacks this year, killing one and leaving 16 injured.

In October, a fisherman in his 50s was bitten while pulling a shark into his boat near Yeppoon.

"Every solid effort was made to save that man's life", O'Connell said.

Queensland Assembly member for Whitsunday, Jason Costigan, described the absence of permanent drum lines as "madness".

After the attack the man was pulled aboard a nearby boat.

Dr. Daniel Christidis, a urologist and researcher at Melbourne's Austin Hospital, was among 10 pals who set out from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbour on a rented yacht for a five-day cruise through Whitsunday Islands, Police Inspector Steve O'Connell said.

The species of shark has not yet been determined.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the meeting, which will be held on Friday, would enable local industry representatives and officials to sit down directly with experts.

"What the tourism industry is saying to me is that they want long-term solutions, not knee-jerk reactions and that's exactly why we intend to sit around the table with the scientific experts and the tourism industry to work on solutions", she said.
