2 in New Hampshire affected by E coli linked to lettuce

Public health officials have told the public to avoid eating romaine lettuce until further notice.

So far 32 illnesses from E. coli poisoning have been reported in the USA, with 13 people being hospitalised, but nobody is thought to have died.

A new warning from the Centers for Disease Control about an ongoing outbreak linked to turkey. It has resulted in one death and 164 reported illnesses in 35 states. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it and throw it away, CDC urged.

No deaths have been reported in the current outbreak, but 13 people in the USA and six in Canada have been hospitalized.

Genetic analysis has found that the strains in this new outbreak are similar to the bacteria that sickened people in both countries in the fall of 2017. Nothing definitive yet, but the early betting is that it came from California's Monterey County or the surrounding growing season, where the romaine lettuce growing season is in full swing.

In fact, tainted irrigation water was identified as a likely source of this year's previous E. coli outbreak linked to romaine from the Yuma, Arizona, region.

Symptoms of E. coli can include nausea, vomiting, headache, mild fever, severe stomach cramps and watery or bloody diarrhea. The illnesses began from October 8, to October 31.

This appears to be a particularly nasty outbreak, with the CDC writing that 13 people have been hospitalized in the US, with one developing kidney failure.

The current outbreak is not related to E. coli infections caused by romaine in April, when 210 people across 36 states were infected and five people died, the CDC said.

The Ottawa resident -described by Ottawa Public Health as an adult under the age of 65 - did not report consuming romaine lettuce, although the person's infection has been confirmed to be connected to the outbreak in Ontario, Quebec and several USA states.

32 people in 11 states, including MI have gotten sick from eating contaminated lettuce.

"If you think you may have symptoms, please don't prepare food, don't prepare food, don't serve food to your family friends or work", said Tricia Kitzman with Linn County Public Health.

But the US President's tone appeared to change on Saturday, when he flew out to California to see the destruction for himself. Soon after the fire began, Trump blamed state officials for poor forest management and threatened to cut off federal funding.
