General Motors to slash 14,000 jobs across North America

At a rally near Lordstown, Ohio, plant last summer, Trump told people not to sell their homes because the jobs are "coming back".

"We'll work with GM to see if anything can be done to preserve a future for the plant and in the meantime, we've set up a jobs center to help employees find new work as quickly as possible", Kasich said.

General Motors is to lay off 14,000 workers in North America and put five factories up for potential closure as it stops making some of its unpopular cars.

While GM is buying out and laying off workers in its core auto operations, the automaker has added close to 1,000 people in the past year at Cruise. That figure was about 50 percent cars just five years ago.

According to GM, the Oshawa plant employed 2600 hourly employees and 300 on salary.

Four factories in the USA and one in Oshawa, Ont. could be shuttered by the end of 2019 if the automaker and its unions don't come up with an agreement to allocate more work to those facilities, GM said in a statement Monday.

"GM received record tax breaks as a result of the GOP's tax bill previous year, and has eliminated jobs instead of using that tax windfall to invest in American workers", he said in a statement.

The Sentinelse tribe has inhabited the island for 60,000 years and are known to violently reject contact from the outside world. The American's kayak became damaged, so he swam to the fishermen's boat, which was waiting at a prearranged location.

The closures will be accompanied by a broader restructuring, reducing GM's overall salaried and contract workforce by 15 percent.

The plant, a 45 minute drive east of Toronto, produces cars such as the Chevrolet Impala and the Cadillac XTS.

The manufacturing overhaul follows recent cost-cutting measures by GM such as offering buyouts to 18,000 salaried employees and exiting or restructuring unprofitable markets such as Europe and South Korea.

Altogether, GM has five auto factories with plenty of unused capacity in Kansas City, Kansas; Lordstown; and Detroit-Hamtramck, Lansing, and Orion Township, Michigan.

Three assembly plants, in Detroit, Ohio, and Ontario, are earmarked for the main cuts, along with two factories in MI and Maryland that build transmissions and batteries.

The moves are meant to shift resources to investing in electric and autonomous vehicles and to prepare for a downturn in the auto market, the automaker said. GM had been expected to close plants because of struggling sales.

GM plans to reduce annual capital spending to $7 billion by 2020 from an average of $8.5 billion a year during the 2017-2019 period.

Propulsion plants in Maryland and MI also will not be given any product.

Trump separately told the Wall Street Journal on Monday that General Motors Co GM.N should stop making cars in China and make them in the United States instead. Barra is also shifting resources toward building electric cars and, eventually, vehicles that drive themselves.

Besides the five plants in US and Canada, GM said it would cease the operations of two more plants outside North America by the end of 2019.

Barra said in a conference call with reporters that she wanted to transition the company when times were good.

The Detroit-based union has already condemned GM's actions and threatened to fight them "through every legal, contractual and collective bargaining avenue open to our membership".

These include workers at assembly facilities in Detroit; Warren, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; as well as at propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland; and Warren, Michigan.
