India will pick their side for the first test against Australia, which begins in Adelaide on Thursday, from the following 12 players, BCCI said on Wednesday.Team - Virat Kohli (captain), Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah.

Handscomb is set to bat at No.5 for Australia while opener Marcus Harris will become Australia's 456th male Test cricketer.

Australia will employ one of their least credentialed batting line-ups in almost half a century with the team's aggregate of 9209 Test runs the lowest since the first Test in 1977-78 when Australia employed six debutants to replace the World Series Cricket rebels.

Captain Tim Paine said Marsh's omission was due to a lack of consistency and he would benefit from returning to Sheffield Shield cricket to find form again.

"That probably sways it to batting, doesn't it?", Paine said.

Both Ashwin and Rohit have been named in the 12-man Indian squad that was announced on the eve of the first Test.

"Mitch Marsh probably just hasn't been as consistent as he would like and we would like", Paine told a news conference on Wednesday.

"We know he's good enough to be a genuine all-rounder at test level".

"We know the talent Mitch has, we know most likely at some stage in this series we'll need him".

"As this series wears on and we get to places where the wicket might be a bit flatter and conditions might be a little warmer and our bowlers a bit exhausted then the all-rounder position becomes important".

It looks like a squad on predicted lines apart from the inclusion of Rohit Sharma, who had not played a Test since January in South Africa.

India's hopes of a series win depend a lot on captain Virat Kohli, who is at the top of his game. "They'll also be under great pressure, I think".

"You have to respect that because no matter how much you talk or behave in a certain manner it's your skill that counts".

"We've been through so much in the last nine months".

Should an extra option be needed, Paine can call on the part-time off-spin of Travis Head.

"The wicket over the last few years here has given enough throughout the game [to not need an all-rounder]". Paine said playing always helps and he was confident that a four-bowler attack would do the necessary job in the first Test.

"They got through the Ashes a year ago I thought and bowled a hell of a lot of overs".

Tim Paine will lead a fresh-faced side featuring just two batsmen with more than 15 Tests experience in Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja.
